The Muul
Empathize
Empathize: Who is your user? Who else will the sourcing, making, transportation, or waste for this project impact and can you mitigate this?
MUUL’s target demographic are users who struggle with nicotine addiction and want a healthy way to wean off their addiction, while still being able to inhale. Unlike MUUL, MUUL’s design goal is to specifically help the user end their addiction, and it needs to appeal to the market of quitting smokers. The MUUL isn’t targetted toward children and teenagers. The MUUL should be used as a way to end a nicotine addiction, which has been in an epidemic with the recent outbreak of vape usage. In order to be considerate of how this product is created, it is important to understand what materials are being used, and how the product is being transported through the supply and retail chain. The MUUL should have a minimal impact on the environment.
- Target audience: People who are already addicted to nicotine, we want to avoid starting it.
- Production: We want to be considerate of how this product is being created, ensuring that we are creating something which has a very low environmental impact, and if possible has environmental benefits.
- Waste: We also want to make sure there is some sort of incentive to return this to be wasted properly, perhaps the next purchase is cheaper, or the device is made of biodegradable components.
Define
Define: What are the user’s needs? Does the need addressed by this product also address other basic human needs mentioned by Hari, Maslow, or Center for Humane Tech? Pick one or more of these rubrics and show how your design uses best practices
- The user has a need for nicotine in a none addicting form to be weened off.
- The need for a way to ween off nicotine follows Maslow’s human rights pyramid for safety needs.
- This device also follows the center for humane tech because in idea this device gets returned after use to be recycled with a money-back incentive. This is to prevent filling our landfills with the hopes to be self-sustaining.
- Allows the user to create an environment in which they are in charge of the plan, so quitting is entirely up to them, allowing the addiction to be controlled.
Ideate
Ideate: Brainstorm a rich array of possible directions the project could take. Think outside the box. Surprise using
- The MUUL was first created to help people addicted to cigarettes quit.
- It failed since the nicotine levels were just as high if not higher than what you would get from the average cigarette.
- This product needs to be sleek like the MUUL and small enough to fit in the hand like a cigarette.
- When people are quitting, you need to wean them off, so keeping the product as similar to a cigarette experience as possible will help to maintain the experience while reducing the nicotine.
- This product should actively avoid the likelihood of new or continued addiction.
- This product should be healthier than current options, while still giving the satisfaction of a cigarette when first used.
- It should be tamper proof, so people can’t break into it and add new nicotine concentrate that might be stronger than what comes standard.
- It should not be accessible to children, so should require a way of authenticating the user before they can use it.
- This product should not be as sexy as a MUUL to avoid it becoming a fashion statement.
- It should not be something that people feel the need to pick up as a new habit.
- For this reason, it should really be something than you cant just keep buying and using.
- It could be possible to get sponsored by foundations like TRUTH to give an option to those trying to end their nicotine addiction.
- The product should have around 3 different versions with varrying nicotine dosages, to accomidate to users whom have smoked longer, and more than others.
Prototype
Prototype:Create a visible or tangible representation of your project. You can use any tech you have learned so far–Adobe products, photos, Adobe Spark, Web gallery, etc You might even consider Adobe XD (free) id you want to mock-up an App
Sleek design– sustainable materials, similar to preexisting vapes,
Test
Test: You should do at least one round of tests with another group and keep a record of findings, then explain how you were (or were not) able to incorporate the feedback and why/not?

How much it the cost and waste will be for this product?
What will it be sold for?
Were aiming for something around ~20 dollars, hopefully this can be achieved with production and material cost.
What system will be used to prevent people from wasting the product improperly?
We will create a system that provides a cheaper cost on the next purchase to anyone who returns their previous waste. Stores will be provided with bins for proper waste, and when they meet a certain level of waste will also be provided with a cheaper price upon their next purchase.
How can we incentivize returning the product for proper waste?
What materials is it going to be made from?
https://greenliving.lovetoknow.com/Type_of_Biodegradable_Plastic
The shell for the battery could be 3d printed from semi-biodegradable plastics.
-The battery is going to use a new form of Aluminum Battery which replaced the graphite in previous aluminum batteries with anthraquinone, and organic material. This replacement makes it possible to replace lithium-ion batteries because this change gives aluminum batteries a lot more potential.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/09/190930082249.htm
-A new form of aluminum-based batteries is starting to be produced. The batteries have twice the power capabilities as previous aluminum batteries which is similar to the now popular lithium but has much better environmental implications.
-For the liquid which goes within the pods, we will use nicotine salt, as it has a good reputation for being the least inhalation for the most effective.
-For the coils, we have to be considerate of how they were built. We want to be considerate of the possibility of metals entering the coil before inhalation.

LEGAL
REGULATION & PUBLIC POLICY
We support reasonable regulation of nicotine products and comply with all relevant laws and regulations.
We did not create MUUL to undermine years of effective tobacco control, and we do not want to see a new generation of smokers. We believe MUUL can accelerate cigarette displacement.
We are committed to understanding MUUL’s performance and impact. Incorporating the latest research from leading scientists in the field drives our innovation.
