Nick Poulin– “Connected toys are another rapidly growing market niche associated with surveillance capitalism. There are educational benefits from children playing with these toys, as well as the possibility of drawing children away from screens towards more physical, interactive, and social play. But major data breaches around these toys have already occurred, marking childrens’ data as another valuable commodity.”

David Jakacky– “some insurance providers require a data feed from the policyholder’s device in order to qualify for insurance cover”.

Emily Clarke– “Sensors such as microphones, cameras, accelerometers, and temperature and motion sensors add to an ever-expanding list of our activities (data) that can be collected and commodified”.

Parker King– “Smaller companies are also cashing in on this. Last year, HealthEngine, a medical appointment booking app, was found to be sharing clients’ personal information with Perth lawyers particularly interested in workplace injuries or vehicle accidents.”

Hana Boucher– “Facebook and Google, are still legally amassing as much information as they can. That includes information about their users, their users’ online friends, and even their users’ offline friends (known as shadow profiling). A shadow profile is a profile created about someone who hasn’t signed up to the particular social platform, but might have some data stored about them because they have interacted with someone who has”.

  • For Emily’s quote- As an apple watch wearer I never really thought about how it was keeping track of every move I make in life. Having something on me constantly telling me data like my steps, health and messages was always super convenient but thinking about it now it’s kind of creepy.
  • For Nicks’s quote- We shouldn’t mess with kids because it’s immoral however companies are starting to use children’s data for targeted ads. Capitalism has become increasingly immoral.
  • For David’s quote- Imagine going to a nutritionist and having them say you need a Fitbit and then unknowingly having your personal information shared with other people/companies.
  • For Hana’s quote- Shadow profiles have can collect data from anyone. You are at risk even if you aren’t put yourself at risk.
  • For Parker’s quote- It seems super illegal for a simple app such as medical booking appointments to work with lawyers in order to steal data and information (especially for people that have been injured etc.).
