I chose to make a logo for the principle of using small and slow solutions. My perception of this principle in nature is that nothing happens fast. From the growth of a plant to keeping eggs warm before they hatch, to a caterpillar transforming in its chrysalis, everything takes precious time to develop. This principle is very important because I believe that a lot of mistakes are driven by impulsive decisions or a lack of thoughtfulness. While listening to a podcast for my marketing class this week, I witnessed a great example of what can go wrong in the tech world when this principle is not applied. The podcast was an interview with Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter. He talked about the addition of all the new features such as the like button, and the ability to favorite a tweet as well as publicly replying to that tweet. He regretfully explained that he and his team just kept adding to the app without thinking of the true impact these additions could have, and the validation people would seek through these numbers. Nor did he think about how quickly information could spread through the retweet function and how that could spread misinformation. Had they taken their time to think through ideas, and take baby steps to see the result of smaller additions, we may not currently have the monster that Twitter is. I think “slow and steady wins the race” is a great way to remember this principle.
I made two different logos for this principle. The first one is a simple bandaid. I chose to make this because when we get hurt, the smallest, most simple solution is to put a bandaid on it. After using a bandaid, you are not healed overnight. It takes a little while of healing and changing. My description of this logo would be: Take the time to heal, think through things inside and out. After making the first one I decided that I also wanted to make one more based around nature. For this I chose to use a sprouting seed. Seedlings are very delicate, you have to have to be careful with them if you want a beautiful plant, much like making technical decisions that will affect a mass amount of people. This logo also, much like the bandaid, highlights the aspect of passing time which is key in using this principle. The sentence I would use to describe this logo: Take time to nurture your ideas, make sure they have everything they need before putting them out.
