For the “destructive” meme, I chose the sarcastic “Thanks Obama” meme. While not terribly destructive on its own, given the obviously sarcastic nature of the meme, it subtly normalizes blaming anything on him, even things which are unrelated to him or are outside of his control. This allowed political opponents to pin a wide variety of faults on Obama over the course of his terms.
As a counter-meme people could start using “thanks Obama” non-sarcastically, over images of positive occurrences. These images could still be completely unrelated to Obama, but would be attributing positive happenings to him rather than negative. While this wouldn’t necessarily remove the effects of the negative memes, it could balance them out and neutralize them.
