Task 2 – Aspyn Call

The article “9 Subtle Ways Technology is Making Humanity Worse” lists nine different ways that technology is harming humans. These include physical ramifications — such as bad posture, eye strain, and insomnia — as well as psychological and social problems — like addiction, sedentary lifestyles, declining mental health, harm to relationships, losing the ability to interact face-to-face, and less self-sufficiency.

The article “Negative Effects of Technology: What to Know” also talks about different ways that technology has negatively impacted humanity. It categorizes the effects into physical consequences — such as eye strain, poor posture, sleep problems, and reduced physical activity — and psychological consequences — such as isolation and depression and anxiety. It also lists the effects that technology has on children, including low academic performance, lack of attention, low creativity, delays in language development, delays in social and emotional development, physical inactivity and obesity, poor sleep quality, social issues, aggressive behaviors, addiction to technology, and higher BMI.

One of these issues that I notice in the world around me, especially as a college student, is the addiction to technology. Most notably, when I walk to class, I notice people not paying attention to where they are going because they are staring at their phone. I’ve even seen someone nearly walk into a building while the fire alarm was going off and everyone had evacuated outside, all because they were looking at their phone.

However, there are many ways to break a technology addiction. One of the most important tips is turning off push notifications. The name is fitting, since they “push” you to pick up your phone and look at it. Turning them off will lead to much less distraction. Another way to reduce technology addiction is by getting rid of bright colors on your screen. Instead of having a colorful phone background, try making your background something that is grayscale. Finally, simply putting your phone in your pocket is an effective practice.
