The documentary “The Social Dilemma” really opened my eyes to how purposely manipulative and addictive social media and technology is for our current generation. Personally, I myself and most of my friends use social media and technology almost 24/7 throughout the day. When my phone/laptop battery runs out and I cannot access a charger, it stresses me out and makes me feel less connected and less accessible to my friends and family. Because we are so adapted to using these products almost all day in our day to day lives, it can take us away from the real world and activities we would be doing if we didn’t have access to them. One example of why technology can cause physical harm to our bodies is the lack of exercise and productivity we have because its much easier and at times more enjoyable to sit in bed watching T.V, playing video games or browsing on our phones than going outside or doing active things in the world that we enjoy such as sports, art or other activities that don’t have you fully emerged in technology in the moment. One example of a human vulnerability that technology takes advantage of is addiction. If you walk into any big lecture hall or classroom, 60%-70% of students are browsing non class related content on either their phones or laptops. I don’t believe this is because they are necessarily not interested in learning or the class but because how accessible and easy it is to give in to the temptation of social media or any other content that is intended to grasp your attention for as long as possible.
I think the only way to resist our temptation and use of technology is to not carry our devices around with us throughout our everyday activities and to limit the amount we use them. This solution is fully up consumer of the product because I do not believe there is a way for technology to actually limit us on how much we use them within an app or a software because you could always erase the software or app that is limiting your use. I do think if the consumer is committed to limiting use an app or software could be helpful and make people more mindful about how much they really are using this and how its harmful to our social and physical lifestyle. If our phones gave us reminders during the day to go outside or put the phone down rather than bombarding us with texts, calls, snapchats, tweets and other things that is programmed to catch our attention and spend our time than we maybe could be more mindful about how much time and energy we are consuming using these devices all day.
