For the articles I read, “Negative Effects of Technology: What to Know” and “9 Subtle Ways Technology is Making Humanity Worse”, they were mostly about the ways technology is psychologically and physically harming people. Some of the highlights are depression, neck and back pain, eye strain, isolation, insomnia, and addiction.
Myself, I have experienced the physical attributions of using my cell phone and laptop. I didn’t think my neck and back pain could come from using technology, but it makes sense now. I also tend to feel insomnia at night which I also didn’t think would come from being on my phone… Despite being told by doctors and my parents. I don’t have much eye strain, maybe I’ve gotten used to it.
As for the psychological aspects of technology use, I don’t find it contributes to my depression. However, isolation probably does. So I guess in some ways it all ties together.
Some ways to help with these issues could be like for eye strain, lowering the brightness on your phone… Especially in the dark. For posture, we could do the 90 degree angle rule for our laptops. You have your computer on the table but your arms are at a comfortable 90 degrees and straighten your back. For cell phones, however, we could try to not slump so much when seated. An easy one for insomnia would be to not use your phone an hour or so before you plan to go to bed. I think for the isolation aspect, people could form online groups of friends closer to themselves and plan outings together. I just recently formed one over snapchat and we’ve discussed some times to hang out.
(my file for my art piece wouldn’t insert in unfortunately an I didn’t know how to fix the problem.)
