Task 2
After Reading “9 subtle ways technology is making humanity worse”, as well as ‘Digital Responsibility: Taking Control of Your Digital Life’, it’s apparent to me that, although technology presents itself with many pros to society as a whole, It does without a doubt take a toll on us as individuals, whether that’s an influx in mental health issues since the birth of social media and the ease of access to it through smartphones. Not to mention the physical health side of things. According to Chelsea Greenwood at Businessinsider.com, Using smartphones and laptop computers can cause a negative impact on one’s posture. “This poor posture can lead not only to back and neck issues, but psychological ones as well, including lower self-esteem and mood, decreased assertiveness and an increased tendency to recall negative things, according to a column in The New York Times.”(Greenwood)
Personally, I’ve dealt with both the physical and mental impact of technology on my life. Writing this assignment I caught myself gravitating to my phone after every chunk of sentences.
The psychological grip technology and social media hold is a very real thing, as easy as it is to forget In a society built around it.
Some ways to combat this issue could be to keep a reminder as a collective that, although technology is a fantastic addition to society, it’s important to unplug and stay updated with the risks of physical and psychological harms it may cause. Maybe, similar to combatting physical addictions to things like alcohol or substance abuse, we simply place a label on specific technologies explaining some of the many risks it may cause. (ex: WARNING – SMARTPHONES MAY CAUSE MENTAL/PHYSICAL HARM, USE AT OWN RISK)
