There are a lot of mental and physical health consequences for engaging with technology in favor of other engagements. Eye strain, depression, anxiety, narcissism, poor posture, and sleep issues are a frequent downside of overuse of technology, and all of these things are recent side effects.
With the depression aspect, there is an interesting finding, mainly that positive interactions online do not contribute to anxiety and depressive disorders across the board. The best solution is to focus on being productive and engaged with your friends online, rather than picking fights with random idiots online.
This also pairs with the narcissism aspect, as appealing to a smaller group of people allows you to engage with people more deeply.
