Task
Design:
Our example is to produce a fertilizer stimulant that helps trees grow faster. This product will be used in facilities similar to pine tree farms that grow trees at an increased speed to allow harvesting wood in controlled areas instead of mass clear-cutting. The fertilizer product will either be injected into tree seeds or genetically modified into the seeds’ makeup to begin the process. During the growth process, people can inject the tree with more products to help the tree naturally.
Upgraded Criteria:
We chose attention for our criteria because we are bringing attention to deforestation and our environment. Deforestation is killing our environment and reducing the total amount of oxygen on the planet, as well as releasing excess carbon dioxide into the air when burnt, or from the machines used to cut them down. We create an app to show people the progress of the farm and allow people to buy their own enhanced tree seeds online. All of the funds will go straight back to the research and costs for running the farm. This would help communities to be able to grow their own wood for building, as well as letting the farm grow large abundances of wood for commercial use instead of clear cutting.
Supportive Context:
For this part of the assignment, students must imaginatively alter the political, social, and economic context. In our instance, the tree farms will be large plots of land spread across different parts of the world that supply wood to their respective region. These farms will help the ecosystem flourish because they will reduce the amount of unnecessary clear-cutting. The clear-cutting that will occur with these farms in operation is cutting in the controlled facilities. Since trees take a long time to grow without our product in motion, these facilities will provide jobs to help maintain the trees throughout their growth process. Since the wood from each facility supplies the neighboring communities, those involved will have an equal amount of timber for whatever they need. The money will also be distributed equally to those who work on the farms because the product produced will be provided for those who work on the farms.
Weigh Costs:
The costs of creating this farm would be some physical labor, and brainstorming from scientists and engineers to create the formulas required to enhance these trees. We would need machines (preferably electric ones) to cut down these new trees, people to work these machines, and people to store and ship the wood to commercial buyers, as well as people to run the app so that community members can order these trees for themselves. The environment would not have many costs, and in fact would improve because of these tree farms, because all of the current forests we are cutting down would stay put and regrow.
