Task 9 – Ashley King

I have seen so many memes like these ones. They are destructive because they perpetuate the problems created by social media and technology by normalizing them. Sometimes relatable memes are good, but when they promote destructive behavior, they are a problem. They create the mindset that “I’m not the only one, so this must be ok.” When I see memes like these, it almost takes away the pressure and anxiety to be a productive, social member of society. I read these memes and feel relaxed and relieved about not getting things done. These memes relate to social media addiction and attention problems, but I have seen similar memes relating to politics and other tech problems. These types of memes acknowledge the problems happening today but create the mindset of doing nothing about them. If memes promote doing nothing, then viewers see them and think, “if other people aren’t doing anything to change, why should I?”

In my meme, I wanted to combat this doing nothing mindset found in many memes. I do not think this meme will have the same viral quality. Negative and relatable memes are more viral. People like memes that make them feel normal. The negative effects of technology are felt by many, so memes that perpetuate and normalize them are more viral.
