When COVID-19 first was announced, and even now, there were a lot of harmful stereotypes and misinformation about Asian people. This was harmful to me, my family, and also the Asian community because there were a lot of stereotypes, stigmas, and misinformation that turned into violence against Asian people in America. Below, I’ve provided a meme that says, “When the asian kid starts coughing”
This is harmful because it creates a bad stereotype that insinuates exclusively Asian people are infected with the COVID-19 virus. Below I’ve adjusted the meme in order to fix it.
This is the new meme that I created. Instead of specifically setting the stereotype that all Asians have covid, I changed the text to inform people that anyone is able to contract covid regardless of race. It’s important that people are informed on how to stay safe during the pandemic. It’s important to wear a mask and stay 6 feet away from others. I think that this meme would not go as viral as it did. I think it’s funny, but it definitely would be geared towards a different group of people. The original meme was geared towards people who thought it was a trend to make fun of Asian people. The new meme is funny, but it isn’t making fun of the expense of someone elses’ race which is a viral factor for some.
In order for good news to be faster than bad news in the digital ecosystem, we must filter what we personally say and also be wary of the types of digital environments we are in. For example, we shouldn’t be spreading negativity on the internet in the first place. I also think it’s important for people to be wary of what the say and where they say it because it can be very harmful towards people. I think that social media apps could regulate good and bad news by creating bots to filter out key words such as cuss words etc…
