I have been using technology for most of the life I have lived and can remember. I remember using instagram when I was a kid in middle school on my iPod touch. I still wonder to this day what kind of impact that it could have caused from using it from such a young age. When you are younger I know that habits and beliefs left unchanged can leave a large impact on the mind and are very likely to stay for a long time if not forever.
One particular thing that I remember feeling for a long time now is the feeling of FOMO, the fear of missing out. The thing is I contribute now a days this fear to the use of instagram and like wise social media applications when I was younger and seeing lots of fun things that I would have wanted to take a part in. I know now that most of what I see online is not what not exactly real. But this effect on my mind would cause me to become almost addicted, if not fully addicted to social media. I know that this is an issue for lots of people and we must be open to a solution. According to the article “9 subtle ways technology is making humanity worse” by Insider it states, “This association is strong enough that clinicians could consider asking their patients with depression and anxiety about multiple platform use and counseling them that this use may be related to their symptoms,” Not just that but Insider also states that most US adults will spend upwards of 11 hours a day in social media and other digital applications. What I suggest is an application that can be implanted on smart devices that will block the use of social media applications after a certain amount of hours is surpassed, and would not be able to be activated until another certain number of hours has passed. The reason why I think this would be a better solution was because a person can still use the important apps on the phone, such as emergency calls or work messages and what not and being able to avoid keeping their phone in a lock box or something like that with no access. The logo for the application would look something like this:
