Its become such an important place for me, especially now that I’ve left for school. What I really admire about where I grew up is how close the community is for everyone. West Hartford is where all my friends and family live, it’s a welcoming community where you feel safe.

Although many people think newer appliances take more energy because they are more technologically advanced, they don’t consider that they can actually be very energy efficient. I learned that newer homes are much more energy-efficient as they adhere to new and better standards. I think new smart technologies have become frowned upon but we don’t realize that newer appliances such as dishwashers and laundry machines are much more energy-efficient as they are so new and follow new considerable standards to help save energy.

Another new technology that I think is very beneficial to our world is the new bikes, scooters, and ways of transportations around cities or towns. West Hartford now uses lime bikes, which charge with renewable energy and neutralizes emissions of our operations by supporting carbon offset projects. Lime bikes allow us to get to and from places, these are reducing gas and providing a cheaper, safer alternative.

One tool I would ban is Alexa. Alexa is an in-home tool that people first started to use for small things such as music. This technology then grew and it allows us to use it in more parts of our home such as locking the door, turning on the lights, or opening the garage. Alexa is a tool that many can benefit from, but it is something that we can live without. It isn’t helping our environment, but it’s helping us work around simple tasks.

Another technology I would eliminate would be desktop computers. We don’t realize it but desktops take a lot of energy as the mouse, the keyboard and computer are all separate. With laptops, all these aspects are connected allowing us to reduce our energy usage. Laptops are also much more compact and portable giving us another advantage.

When trying to decide what technologies should stay or which should be banned, I think the whole community should have a say. The community should vote or discuss which ones are most harmful and which are most beneficial to our lives.

https://www.starenergypartners.com/blog/energy-efficiency/out-with-the-old-why-older-homes-are-less-energy-efficient/https://www.li.me/en-us/home

I’ve lived in West Hartford, Connecticut for all 19 years of my life.
