Mitch’s Toolbox

Edward Weston (1886 – 1958) –  All black and white photos to emphasize light. Shape and intricacy seems to be the most prominent theme in his photos. He takes a very specific perspective to all of his subject matter. He also does a really nice job creating even photos in the sense of contrast. Almost every photo has a fullness to it that is very satisfying.

Dorothea Lange – All black and white photos. Does a great job capturing genuine moments. Her portraits show real emotion and convey a message in a single picture. Many of her images emit pain in a very powerful way.

“Any one looking at Dorothea’s photos today can see her feelings written all through them.”

It sounds like a lot of the pain we see could be a reflection of her frustration with Polio and her father’s desertion.

I love she created a darkroom out of a chicken coup. Show’s her creativity and passion for photography.

Through all of her work, there is clear intention behind it – I don’t mean intention in composition (they of course have that) But intention in the subject matter and story behind each photo

Her photo, “Migrant Mother”, is probably my favorite photo of hers. There is such authentic emotion in this picture.
