Part 1

Ansel Adams

The tetons and the Snake River- framing

Grass and pool- contrast

Jose Clemente- subject

-the photos were majorly in black and white with lots of landscapes with close ups of texture.

2) Ansel Adams would get his peace of mind from being in nature and being outside. This influenced him to take lots of pictures of landscapes and mountains as well as lots of pictures in Yosemite. When the war came his photos started becoming more dramatic. He progressed from more quiet art to more dramatic, heroic art. At his job for the department of the interior he had to start making huge murals and the dramas of those years at that job was infused into his work.

Paul Strand

  1. Abstraction Twin Lakes, Connecticut
  2. From the El- mood/atmosphere

Rebecca- subject

Paul Strands style was modernism. He realized the power of the image was very influential and used his photography to influence reform and social consciousness. He traveled a lot and you can see a change in his perspectives as he traveled and some of his photographs exemplified his leftist political views. Rebecca, as shown above was one of his 3 wives and was the subject of many of his photographs.

For the criteria of subjects I think both of these photographers do a great job of framing their subjects in a way that you know the subject is the only thing you should be focusing on. Both Paul Strand and Ansel Adams do close ups of the subject when the subject is the emphasis of the photo and also do a good job of capturing emotion. Below is a picture of my cat, whose emotion is not captured and the framing is not only of the cat but of the window which might be confusing.

I think I could apply more emotion by getting a shot of the cats face which I did below.

I think I did a good job at using contrast in this photo of leaves that I captured but I think putting it into lightroom to get more contrast would have made this photo more abstract and make the leaves pop with more contrast.

Part 2

Cindy Sherman

Known for strange subjects, and photographing women and herself. She likes to photograph things that might be in one’s imagination and things that are abstract. She was shocked by how she was treated when she went to college walking down the street. She went through all the phases looking down the street and tried to look scary, look like a man, and when she got all dressed up and was feminine she was scared to walk down the street. Her photos show how hard it is to be a women sometimes. She was also influenced by her favorite movie genre Horror.

The photo uses digital effect on photshop to create saturation where needed and created the drippy background.

In this photo above Cindy does a good job using creativity. She took candy, broken pop-tarts and some concoction to make a gross looking scene.

In the photo above Cindy does a good job at using exposure. The subject is clearly taken in a darkly lit room and the photo only shows where there is light. Very low exposure sets the eerie mood.

I really like what Cindy did with digital special effects and adding saturation to the first photo and the drippy background.

This is the only picture that i have tried with a different background in photoshop when i was experimenting. i think I could have set the background to the same filter as the pic of me to help the layers blend better like Cindy did.

I think i did a good job at using exposure in the picture above but i think i could have leveled up the contrast and shadows a bit more to emphasize the exposure.

Richard Avedon

Beekeeper-creativity and contrast. I like the contrast between the subjects body and the bees. I also like how Richard put the photo in black and white.

Interstate

Richard does a good job framing in the piece interstate.Richard does a good job at exposing the photo Bianca Jagger to create shadows and contrast.

2) He was a documentarian and took realist photos mostly in black and white. His father was very strict and he lived in a strict household growing up which could explain his realism and the seriousness of his photos. He longed to photograph people of accomplishment, celebrities, and political figures. He photographed the American civil rights movement, farmers, and miners.

3) Here is a picture I took that could use better framing. I think i needed to either frame the photo where the stem is or where the pot is and crop out the window more.

This photo was taken from an interesting perspective of mushrooms on a tree. I think i could’ve edited this in a lightroom a bit more to get the ideal amount of contrast to bring out the mushrooms more and make the photo more abstract.
