 “Science at Magic Hour”

My girlfriend and I set out on a brisk November evening right after the first snow of the season. She needed to complete a science project and wanted company. However, we soon found ourselves somewhat racing against time to finish up before the sun completely sank behind the mountains in the distance. The temperature was dropping and a steady wind soon leached into my body; chilling me to the bone.

I wanted to capture the landscape in the fading light, while also showing the process of my girlfriends project. Which was to measure the Ph value and soil content of the water. Measuring 30 yards across the shoreline she went in 10 foot increments measuring the PH and scanning the color of the water at each location to determine the amount of minerals and micro fauna that the Lake might have.

The wind started to pick up more and by the end of it I had the car running and the heat of high. The trip was a gentle reminder of how brutal the elements can be and how serious the weather is in Maine during the winter. As the sun crept down there was a silence that swept over Pushaw Lake and geese could be heard in the distance. Being at the mercy of the elements can be humbling for the soul.
