1: My first story proposal is about my mom. I want to interview my mom and talk about what it was like growing up in an immigrant family. Especially around the holidays. I want her to tell stories about anything that comes to her mind and the things she remembers at the large gatherings. How her family was able to keep their culture alive, while also integrating it into their new American culture. While this interview or sound bits are playing I want the pictures to be of my family (just my parents and sister and me because of covid) cooking together to prepare for the holidays. The audience for this project would be my family, so they can hear and remember their history and be able to look back on this later on in life. But also other families of immigrants. Because my mom’s story is just like the millions of other immigrant families in this country. I feel that they’d be able to relate to some of the things my mom is saying and connect with the images.
2: My second story proposal is about my grandma (my dad’s mom). I am not really sure where I would go with this or what the angel is. I would first need to do an interview to find some part of her life to focus on. She grew up in Queens, New York, in an immigrant Irish Catholic family. She has many stories to tell about New York and her childhood and our family. But to her and me, she is just an “ordinary” girl from Queens. Although I know that that isn’t true, when you grow up in a prominently Irish immigrant neighborhood, you feel like everyone else. I think it would be really interesting to find something to focus on and have her explain to great lengths. Since I don’t know as much about my dad’s side of the family as Irish Catholics don’t share as much or tell as many stories as Latino Catholics do, this would be a very interesting piece for our family to have to look back on.
Both projects do not have sample pictures yet since I will be taking them when I go home for Thanksgiving.
