CHARACTER FUNCTIONS
Review all the character functions in Truby’s Anatomy of Story.
- Protagonist-a man, age between 25-35, around 6 feet tall. Dark Brown hair, short mustache, quick-witted, cleaver can think on his feet, not very strong always wears his fancy watch, passed down from multiple generations.
- Opponent– the government/police- the main person will be a Woman, tall, light brown hair, 25 or younger, the bracelet on her left hand. male cop- a little shorter than his partner, black hair, wears black boots, around 35 or older, rather stubborn, and short-tempered, rather muscular, always has a blue and black police hat on, sunglasses optional.
- Ally- an older man who just wants to help, 75 or older, above average for fitness at his age, bolding, white hair, wise with knowledge, wanting to share. Has a walking stick he carved himself, usually wears a hat(light brown) sees the Protagonist helps him get to a country.
- Fake-AllyOpponent-This could be a store owner that is rude to the Protagonist but ends up helping his by defusing a potential fight
- Fake-Opponent Ally-people the Protagonist just meets getting into the first country, try don’t really care about him, our Protagonist is generally trying to meet and make friends, shorter, no shoes, not much hair, aged around 30/40
- Subplot Character- this could happen at the same time as the Protagonist’s story, we see what’s happing to his family
Then list and describe any characters you have that fit these roles. Or, create new characters for any of thee roles that will be essential in your story. Note that the weather can be an opponent, and an apple tree can be an ally.
CHARACTER ARCHETYPES
Which of these archetypes defines your protagonist? How & why?
Which other archetype matches the other characters in your story? For each key character archetype used in your story, describe 1-2 actions these characters will take that will challenge the protagonist and push them to change/grow.
- King/Father-probably the government/police chancing the Protagonist, calling the shots, making the orders,
- Queen/Mother
- Mentor/Teacher/Wizard-the old wise man offers advice, helps him get to another country safely.
- Warrior– The Protagonist, fighting for his freedom, trying to be a normal person in the process, unless a fight breaks out.
- Artist
- Lover
- Rebel– a one-off character that wants to help our Protagonist a little way into a different country.
- Other?
ARCHETYPE DESCRIPTION
Describe ways your protagonist fits the archetype. Then describe ways s/he/they deviate from the archetypes and so has some individuality. How & Why is this important to your story?
Warrior, he will be a fighter, and honestly not mind picking a fight, he will also be rather kind and talk to people in town, try to break up fights, and be more so gentle, when he’s not fighting.
