REVISED Interview with Austin Thibeau- EmmaH

Most afternoons, Austin Thibeau can be found sitting in the IMRC working on homework or his capstone project, and researching recipes he could make at home and add to his virtual cookbook. Inspired by his interests in graphic design and baking, Austin is creating an engaging capstone focusing on a 3D modeled cookbook design featuring videos from recipe website, Bon Appetit.

Austin grew up in Presque Isle, Maine before coming to the University of Maine. In high school, he started his own baking business, @cupcakes, and successfully sold them until he couldn’t keep up with demand. He also plays violin, and occasionally played at weddings. Before transferring to UMaine, Austin attended other colleges, and switched his major five times before settling on New Media. He chose New Media for it’s diversity in different subjects, as well as the ability to focus on some graphic design and studio art as well. For Austin, New Media was the perfect major because it allowed him to explore all of his interests before focusing on specific concepts he was interested in, like photography and 3D modeling.

Austin’s capstone is focusing on his passion for baking. His capstone is an Augmented Reality program that is a cookbook with videos from Bon Appetit, the recipe website. The recipe videos pop up when the user flips the pages. In order to get permission to use the videos, Austin had to contact Bon Appetit and ask if he could use their videos. Bon Appetit responded and said they were interested in his project, and would be glad to allow him to use the videos. Austin hopes to stay in contact with Bon Appetit while finishing his capstone.

Outside of New Media, Austin spends his free time in the kitchen baking, and plays his violin in the school orchestra. Other interests include photography, 3D modeling, animation, and digital art, of which he takes classes in as electives. After graduation, Austin hopes to move to Austin, Texas to live with his brother.

Austin Thibeau, from Presque Isle, Capstone student, likes baking, violin. Bakes in his free time, had his own baking business in high school and plays violin in the school orchestra, as well as for fun. He used to do weddings, and then had one awful bride.

THE BACKGROUND

What’s your story? Where do you come from? Why are you doing what you are doing?

He transferred here, and he switched his major five times, and is here for the graphic design aspect of New Media. Finally he settled on a degree that allowed him to do a little bit of everything.

Working on his capstone with Ian Donnelly, who is doing a lot of the coding on the project. Has soft plans to move to Austin, TX after graduation, where his brother lives.

His capstone is the foodie app with bon appetite videos and he’s a big fan of bon appetite. He really liked cooking and had worked on a project where a cookbook showed videos with bon appetite. He contacted them and asked if he could use their videos, and they were interested and said that he could.

Anecdote: New Media was a good compromise for him, because it encompassed a lot of different interests. Considering he switched his major so many times, New Media seemed perfect because of the diverse curriculum.
