Task 1- Symbols within Nausicaa:

Story symbol- Nausicaa embodies the theme of anti-war (for the most part) and environmental protection throughout the whole story and is just about the only one who constantly provides peace in both aspects.

Symbolic character- The main characters we defined within Nauiscaa include the large bugs that live in the evil forest, Nausicaa who wants to protect the environment and assemble peace when she can, villagers, and those trying to attack the village. The characters trying to attack the village are almost always found with a gun. Guns become a prominent symbol within this story because one of the main concepts of the theme is anti-war.

Symbolic theme- The theme of Nausicaa is focused on the protection of the environment and anti-war. One symbol our group found was the embryo (lethal human with bioweapons)  that the “aliens” left after crashing into the village is a symbol for destruction and war which further ties into the theme.

Symbolic worlds- The forest and the valley are the two main symbolic worlds. The forest represents untamed nature and the valley symbolizes a sense of respite. The jungle is unintentionally dangerous whereas the valley is more in between.

Symbolic objects- A symbolic object we remembered was the whistle that Nausicaa used to calm the ohmu- this symbol stands for peace and instead of harming the environment, Nausicaa protected them.

Task 2-

  1. Story Symbol
I would say the concept of having a soulmate becomes the largest symbol throughout this story- the hints that are needed along the way become an aspect of this symbol as well. A soulmate as a symbol works through the overall theme of the story, that beauty is on the inside and that self-love must endure before she can love others because she later finds out that she is her own soulmate.
  2. Symbolic Characters
The kinds of characters that populate the story include the college “friends”, Oliver, Kristina’s parents, and the main character Kristina. The college “friends” have a special skill or advantage that Kristina doesn’t have. They have their hints and they have their soulmates- this does correlate to a symbolic role because they have what Kristina is longing for. Oliver is one of the most profound symbolic characters because he too (along with Kristina) is found without a soulmate- he clarifies and is accountable for his own journey before they realize they can be their own soulmates.
  3. Symbolic Theme
The main theme of this story is that beauty is on the inside and that self-love must be found before you can love others.    One part of this story that correctly applies to the story’s theme is when Kristina turns down Oliver. She cannot perceivable love another person yet because she is still struggling on the inside. Another part of the story that applies to the theme is in the very beginning when Kristina tries to talk to her friends who have all received their soulmates- they unfriend her and kick her out of the group. This just goes to show that beauty is on the inside and that before you can show appreciation/happiness towards others, you must first love yourself.
  4. Symbolic Worlds
There are three-story worlds that exist within this story. The first is a campus, the second is her home and the third is the world (coffee shop) once she overcomes her self-revelation. The campus defines its inhabitants by providing hints for them to receive and also providing soulmates that also belong to the campus world. These characters are mean and show ungenuine behavior towards Kristina. Within Kristina’s home, she is depressed and has soulmates which inherently holds her back from discovering self-love. Lastly, the world that Kristina encounters when she overcomes her main conflict (to figure out who her soulmate is) inhabits Oliver who in the end shares a common symbolic theme.
  5. Symbolic Objects
I think one important symbolic object I tried to incorporate within my story was a mirror. Mirrors reflect the reality of what we truly see vs. what we perceive. The mirror, in the beginning, provides a symbol because Kristina looks into the mirror but does not think of herself as a soulmate. In the end, she looks into the mirror once again and the mirror reflects her true soulmate- she finally understands.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             (I ran out of time in class to add to this because I wanted to pay attention to the other spark boards you were presenting).
