War vs Peace: War vs Peace is a common theme throughout the movie and even in the beginning of the film. One example of how this term/theme occurs right from the start is when they start to sense trouble in the village and Ashitaka goes to the watch tower to check out the scene. When Ashitaka arrives at the watch tower, a demon knocks down the tower but luckily Ashitaka jumps free and kills him with arrows after he tries to mediate the situation. Ashitaka is an example of somebody who wants peace and the boar/demon is a representation of hatred and war. I chose this term primarily because I was most engaged in moments of war and was interested in the outcomes of them.
Environmentalism: I chose this theme alongside War vs Peace because industrialization is a main reason why the war is going on in the first place. Princess Mononoke is enraged with Lady Eboshi because she is cutting down the forest in order to industrialize and to produce more iron. This can be related to todays world because we are cutting down more trees and natural resources in order to produce more unnatural resources that are potentially harmful to the environment. I think the two themes I chose correlate with each other and as I was writing this and brain storming I gained a higher understanding in the hidden messages of the film. I think hidden messages and themes are very prevalent in this movie and it is way more than just a story rather a bunch of important lessons/messages we can take away from it.
As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, I think this is a highly emotional movie and their are a lot of hidden messages and lessons to take away from it. I think a lot of the problems in the movie are relevant in todays world. I was never the person to watch anime or ever give it a chance but being in this class has opened my eyes to realizing that it isn’t just fairy tail/made up story for children, and some of the content can actually be related into todays world.
