Hatred
When Ashitaka is cursed his whole world is flipped upside down. He has to leave his home and never return. Everything he’s ever known is now in the past and he has to start a new journey. Throughout his journey, we see how people are motivated by hatred. Which leads to his journey to see the world unclouded by hate.
Throughout the whole movie, we see him act in ways of forgiveness instead of revenge and hatred. One moment that really stuck out to me was when Ashitaka comforts San. At the moment he is acting in a caring way but he also truly believes that everything will be okay as long as they both have each other. We see this trend continue as the movie goes on. The forest spirit could have easily just kept killing the humans for all the things they have done to their land in the past but he and Ashitaka both decide to see with eyes unclouded with hate. This is one of my favorite things about this movie, how to come to a resolution you have to see the world without hatred. I feel like we could use that in the real world.
Curse
When Ashitaka kills a God he is put under a curse that makes him see the world without hatred. He is also banished from his hometown and forced to try and fix his curse. As he goes along through the movie he meets several different people who by the end of the movie will have changed ways. San ends up not minding humans and Lady Iboshi fixes up the town so that it respects everyone.
Overall the curse is what makes the movie what it is. Without it, Ashitaka would have never learned how to see clearly without hate. From there the effect of the curse spreads from him to others and we see that at the end of the movie. For me, that was a very satisfying ending, and also a little bit inspiring.
