CHARACTER FUNCTIONS

  • Protagonist – Poppy: the main character and driver of the story, events happen specifically to stunt or develop her as a character. Poppy also leads the University’s charge to abolish greek life on her campus and helps to organize protests and meetings revolving that issue, furthering her leading role within the story.
  • Opponent – In this case there are a few opponents, but the most obvious would be Isaac, Poppy’s assaulter and the president of the main frat in question. Some other opponents are the other frat brothers (of multiple frats), sororities, and campus officials.
  • Ally – Again there are lots of allies throughout this story (other SA survivors, women and men on campus, as students or staff, who protest alongside Poppy, and one surprising brother from the main frat in question).
  • Fake-Ally/Opponent – This one brother, Elijah, acts as a sort of fake opponent, he agrees with Poppy and her group that greek life is toxic, even for the people within it. Elijah is one of the only brothers to speak out about the harm Poppy endured.
  • Subplot Character – I’m not so sure that I want to have a subplot character, but I was thinking about potentially having the main inspector be the subplot character, because while I want the investigation to play a role in the story I want it to be more of a subplot than a major plot point of the story.

CHARACTER ARCHETYPES

Archetypes can help you see the role your characters play in your story.

Which of these archetypes defines your protagonist?  How & why?

My main Character fits

Which other archetypes match the other characters in your story? For each key character archetype used in your story, describe 1-2 actions these characters will take that will challenge the protagonist and push them to change/grow. Use characters to challenge each other and spur action.

  • King – Isaac acts as a weak sort of king, he is the leader/president of the main frat in question and expects his followers to listen to him and do as he says, because he has the power to do just that.
  • Teacher – I’m thinking of having a sort of mentor type character to help lead some of the anti-greek life protests on campus.
  • Warrior – Poppy along with a few of the friends she has made through this journey act as warrior archetypes, leading forces for what is right and beneficial for students on campus, with (somewhat) little regard for the potential repercussions.
  • Trickster/Clown – Isaac and other frat brothers act as tricksters, not in the fun joking way but in a more tantalizing and harmful way.
  • Lover – some of Poppy’s friends become her sort of lovers, or at least falls into this archetype by showing unconditional support for Poppy throughout her journey and new findings.
  • Rebel
  • Other?
