CHARACTER ARCHETYPES

Which of these archetypes defines your protagonist?  How & why?

The archetype that defines the protagonist is the Rebel archetype.  His entire goal is rebel against his own family, mostly his father.  But his ambitions are the exact opposite of what his family had in mind.  He must do whatever it takes to rebel and find his own path.

Which other archetypes match the other characters in your story? For each key character archetype used in your story, describe 1-2 actions these characters will take that will challenge the protagonist and push them to change/grow. Use characters to challenge each other and spur action.

  • King/Father – Vincent’s father, takes control over Vincent. Has the most power out of anyone there due to his physical size and manipulation skills
  • Queen/Mother – Vincent’s mother, there will be times when Vincent is overwhelmed and stress about his father.  His mother will be there for him when he feels anger and rage towards his father.  She is the middle ground between the two.  She is the reason they didn’t kill each other off the bat.
  • Mentor/Teacher/Wizard – Uncle, he becomes the father figure for Vincent since his real father is going ballistic.
  • Warrior
  • Trickster/Clown – Family Friend #2, in this story there needs to be some humor.  But also some serious humor.  With this character no one ever really understands him.  He’s a friend of Vincents father and they’ve been rolling together since they were kids.  This character adds some mental diversity to the group.

  • Lover
  • Rebel – Vincent

ARCHETYPE DESCRIPTION

Describe at least 3 ways your protagonist fits the archetype. Then describe at least 3 ways s/he/they deviates from the archetypes and so has some individuality.

Protagonist:

Fits-

  1. He rebels against his father.
  2. He wants to do something completely differently than everyone he knows.
  3. There are several things from preventing him being a rebel but he does whatever it takes to get out.

Deviates-

  1. He doesn’t really want to leave his family.
  2. Deep down he loves his father and doesn’t want to have to kill him.
  3. His mother tries to keep in a part of the group.

Antagonist:

Fits-

  1. He is physically intimidating.
  2. He takes responsibility for everything. If it weren’t for him, the group would be a mess.
  3. Everyone follows his directions.

Deviates-

  1. He gets soft when he hears his son wants to leave.
  2. His brother takes over the father role at some points.
  3. The group starts to fall apart and he doesn’t know what to do.

How & Why is this important to your story?  ie both the fit and the deviations? In other words, how does your story both use and bend these archetypes, and thus evolve our understanding of what archetypes can be.

In this story the characters have such conflicting archetypes.  So with these characters they will all create a balance with each other.  There will be characters to handle certain situations and characters to solve certain problems.
