Hatred:

In the movie Princess Mononoke hatred is shown throughout the entire movie. The main character Prince Ashitaka has to deal with his hatred throughout the entire film due to his curse he acquired at the beginning of the movie. There was multiple instances where Ashitaka had to control his emotions when becoming to enraged. But the curse would only ever effect him when he felt a wave of anger or rage. For instance when Ashitaka visited the Iron Town he got to meet there leader Lady Eboshi. She explained to him the reason why they created such destructive weapons was to kill any animals or gods that try to get in there way. This upset Ashitaka to the point where he had to restrain his cursed arm so it wouldn’t kill Lady Eboshi. This movie shows how hatred can cloud a persons thoughts, feelings, and actions which would cause someone to do something completely out of the ordinary.

When thinking about the curse it seemed to have different effects on the characters it came into contact with. Like our main character Ashitaka who seemed to have the curse for the longest but he was able to manage the curse even though it was spreading throughout his entire body. While the god Okkoto fell into the curses grasp once he realized that the humans were wearing the skins of his tribe in order to hide from the forest spirit. What I believe is that the curse only manages to take full control when someone or something represents true hatred.

Suffering:

In the movie Princess Mononoke I said that hatred is shown throughout the entire film but something that goes along with that is suffering. Everyone was suffering the animal tribes and the humans but what I think suffered the most was the environment. Since there was constant conflict whether it be humans fighting humans, or humans fighting gods/animals the land around them was being destroyed. For example in Iron Town Lady Eboshi kept shooting away monkeys/apes who were planting seeds so that new trees could grow. She did this because if the trees grow back over the iron mine then the town will most likely lose there only way of wealth. Since there was so much conflict going on the environment or wilderness wasn’t really able to heal or grow back.

I feel like even though we saw the animal tribes and humans suffer a lot throughout the film what most people didn’t notice was how damaged the environment had become. The damaged was caused by all the hatred each separate group had towards each other. Also the damage to the environment or wilderness around the characters shows how violent and dangerous each encounter  was between the different groups or tribes.
