There were those who sought to conquer and control it, and there were those trying to protect it and the various forms of life that relied on it. Lady Eboshi and her army of lepers residing in Irontown needed to destroy the forest to harvest more iron for their weapons, and to expand the cities wealth. Ashitaka and San, along with the help of the wolf Gods, needed to protected the forest to stop the violence and war that was taking place.

When Ashitaka first sets off on his adventure into the forest, he meets the Kodama, little white spirits that he claims: “are a sign that the forest is healthy.” These spirits only appear when there is no fighting going on, and nowhere near Irontown. The presence of the Kodama are an interesting contrast between the parts of the forest that have been destroyed by Irontown, and those that have been left alone and unaffected by the war.

Hatred/Rage:

One of the main drivers for the characters in Princess Mononoke is their feels towards each other. Such as San and Lady Eboshi, two characters who were constantly trying to kill one another throughout the movie. I believe this is because they stood for polar-opposite goals, and were fueled by the hatred and rage they felt towards each other. San wanted to kill Lady Eboshi for destroying the forest, where she lived with her mother (Moro). The wolf gods and San fought Lady Eboshi until the very end, where a wolf takes Eboshi’s arm, a recall to something she said earlier “Cut off a wolf’s head and it still has the power to bite.”

Another example of hated and rage, is how Ashitaka controls himself throughout the movie. When Ashitaka is fighting, the powers of his curse take ahold of him. Ashitaka is able to control his rage however, and does not let it consume him or allow him to make unwise decisions. Rage takes control of plenty of other characters in this movie, such as the beast that initially gave Ashitaka his curse, San, Lady Eboshi, and even the Forest Spirit after losing its head. What was interesting to me, was Ashitakas ability to keep a level head, even with his curse, and to ultimately “see with eyes unclouded by hate.”

Forest: Throughout the movie, there was a heavy emphasis on the importance of the forest.
