Terry is the main character, and is the center of the story. The plot follows his experiences getting lost in a desert that is trying to kill him.

Opponent – The desert is Terry’s enemy. The desert tries to keep Terry from leaving by using mirages and high-speed winds that keep Terry from flying away.

Ally – A possible ally to Terry is the skeletal remains of other animals that have died in the desert. Terry is able to take shelter in their remains during the night to survive. Maybe the spirits of these animals indirectly try to help Terry, but can’t communicate with him since he is alive.

Fake-Ally/Opponent – The mirages that the desert uses is a fake ally to Terry, as they give him a false sense of hope. The mirages are created to exhaust Terry, which he doesn’t realize until late into the story.

Subplot Character- Possibly the souls/ ghosts of dead creatures that inhabit the desert, and Terry’s family which he was separated from in the beginning of the story.

Archetypes

Terry – Hero

The best archetype that fits Terry is the hero. This is the story of Terry, and his adventures into the desert, and his struggles to escape the environment. To do so, he must find a way to defeat his enemy, and reunite with his family. For the first event Terry will have to perform in order to defeat the desert. I’m thinking that he’ll have to tackle his fear of the ghostly spirits that inhabit the desert during night time. Conquering this fear will help Terry explore during the night, which is the only way he will discover how to out smart the desert. The second event that Terry will have to deal with is, presumably at the end, flying out of the strong winds that have been keeping him grounded.

Desert – Trickster

The most fitting archetype for the desert is the trickster. This was easy to determine because after all, the mirages and oasis that the desert creates are all tricks used to deceive and confuse Terry, so that he can never escape and the desert can consume him. One example of the desert as the trickster will be creating an oasis, one full of water and trees, that Terry finds himself unnaturally attracted towards. Terry wants to get to the salvation that he believes the oasis will bring him, but the desert keeps moving it further away the closer Terry gets. Another “trick” that that desert will use to prevent Terry from escaping is the brutally cold, windy nights that prevent Terry from traveling any further. Forced to take shelter in the remains of other critters, Terry is forced to survive in the brutal night conditions. I’ve thought that maybe during the night, the desert is sleeping, and cannot create illusions to trick Terry, so it relies on hindering his ability to move. Ultimately, Terry will discover that the desert is “alive” and sleeps during the night, and that’s his only time he can escape.

3 ways Terry fits the Hero archetype:

.He is on a quest to reunite with his family and misses them dearly.

.As a hero, Terry must be courageous by conquering his fears to defeat the desert.

.Terry finds himself in an unusual circumstance, unlike the rest of his family, he finds himself in a unique situation unknown to others, something he must face alone.

3 ways Terry deviates:

.Terry is a regular flying eyeball, he does not possess any special abilities or attributes that sets him apart from his species

.Terry is gullible and kind of unwitty. It takes him a while to process the severity of his situation.

.Terry is not especially strong, he’s relatively regular, and must challenge himself to survive.

3 ways Desert fits archetype:

.The desert uses mirages to trick Terry.

.By creating a moving oasis, the desert is able to keep Terry “motivated” by the promise of salvation.

.The desert uses it’s trickery to manipulate the protagonist, and has its own agenda/motives for keeping Terry in the desert.

2 ways Desert deviates:

.Since the desert is alive, it must sleep. This gives Terry a chance to defeat it.

.The desert cannot move or directly manipulate Terry.

How and why is this important to my story?

These archetypes are important to the story because they directly relate to the plot. It’s a story about a hero’s quest to defeat the protagonist, in this case a tricky desert. The desert creates false realities to keep Terry around so that he dies and the desert becomes more powerful. Terry must overcome his own struggles as a regular flying eyeball and defeat an enemy much stronger than him.

Protagonist – Terry the flying eyeball.
