What makes a good video game story? Well that really is dependent upon the individual playing the game. Various people appreciate various aspects of video games. With that being said, I’d rather answer this question based upon my own opinion.
My favorite video game story is “To the Moon” by Freebird Games. To The Moon is not a “gameplay” heavy game. It is really created just to tell a short story. At about 5-10 hours of playtime, you follow two dream doctors as they help an old man have his final wish. While I do not want to delve deep into the story since I personally believe it is accessible enough that most people should be able to play it, I can explain the positives that help hold To The Moon to a higher standard. The developer Ken Gao managed to tell a story with minimal visuals, audio, and really content in general.

This game relies on, in my opinion, music to really pull the story above and beyond other video game stories. The music in this game for the most part are instrumental and piano only pieces that carry the mute character’s emotions along with the in game text. The music in this game actually inspired me to learn the piano and started my personal love for instruments.
To the moon, while not a visually stimulating adventure, really carries a strong story through beautiful music and a heartfelt story. For the low price point that this game is at, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light and heartfelt adventure!
