Backside of Sugarloaf

Chapter 1

A group of friends looking to enjoy a cold brisk day on the Sugarloaf mountain, five friends from college just enjoying the back side of this beautiful mountain with amazing views. Heading to the mountain from the cabin all five of the guys, are overly excited to hit the slopes for the first time of the year, with a wind chill of about negative 10, they put on extra layers and got in the truck. Already really anxious to head out onto the mountain, as a group they decide which glade to hit first, looking at the map of the mountain they decide to hit chess picker first which is a double black diamond glade that is pretty aggressive to start on the first run but they were ready to hit the slopes and kill it this skiing season. All the guys clinching on to their twin tip skis get out of the car and head up to the lodge with their backpacks ready to put on their boots. As they open the doors to the mountain, the snow starts coming down and everyone is on the mountain, they see some friends from school, catch up, and head to the line of the chairlift. Being a windy day and all, only the bluebird express five-person chairlift is working today which means that the lines are extra long today, As they all wait in line, a huge wind gust blows and the chairs on the lift start swaying immensely,  two of the guys Simon and Eli are a little worried that today may be a tough day to hit the back side of the sugar loaf but Johnny, Tim, and Mika tell them to man up and they grab a chair and head up the mountain. Having got a chair on the bluebird express, all of them can sit comfortably and not worry about losing anyone on the ride up the summit of the mountain. The wind starts picking up when they get closer to the top of the mountain and gets colder and colder, thank god for the wind blockers or they would be on the ground because of how strong the wind was. Getting off the chairlift they head to the blue trail that goes by the name of Spinnaker and makes their way to chess picker glade. Heading down through the glade some of the guys were struggling and man was it cold, the snow was coming down harder and the wind was picking up. They reach the midway of the mountain and take a two-person chairlift up to the summit and begin their journey through the back side of the mountain. Not having much powder on the back side of the mountain, it was tough to gain control of the skis which made it tough to stay in each other’s past, however with the snow coming down hard now and the wind picking up the visibility was harder than ever before. The guys reach a stopping point in the middle of the woods. All of a sudden there were three of them instead of five. They all look dazed and confused, they yell and yell until the friends are so out of breath they are struggling for water.

Chapter 2

With two friends missing, the three left in the group decide to head down the mountain hoping to meet them at the base of the backside. With the storm brewing heavily they begin to lose vision, only to find themselves all lost from each other, losing control of his skis Eli has a dislocated shoulder and cannot find anyone, he screams in desperation, but no one hears him. Eli decides to make a tourniquet for his shoulder, but with the sun setting fast and the storm picking up he must figure something out. He decides to head down the mountain as fast as he can, until Eli begins to hear someone yelling “Help!!” “Help!!” the voice sounds familiar to Eli only to see that it is Johnny underneath a tree and can’t get out from underneath, Eli runs down to help Johnny but is having serious trouble getting the tree off of Johnny with just using one arm. After trying every solution to get the tree off Johnny, in the distance they see a fast moving light heading towards them, at a screeching halt Mika gets off his skis and is more than happy to see them two, Mika helps Eli get Johnny from underneath the tree and they begin to head down the mountain. As they are walking down they hear growling in the brush with for glowing yellow eyes, they pause until they witness 2 hungry wolves running after them they run down the mountain with there life depending on it only to see they must jump off the cliff in order to survive, they take their chances and leap into the five feet of snow. Mika in critical pain gets concussed and the fall broke his hand, however, they are able to fend off the wolves and keep trekking down the mountain.

Chapter 3

After traveling two miles, dying of thirst, they come across a spring to refresh there dried out lungs and take a break. With no sense of direction, the three friends are praying that Tim and Simon made it down the mountain in one piece. With injuries sustained between the three of them they are fighting the storm that closed down the mountain due to high winds, and it’s only a matter of time before it gets dark out, seeing the lodge from the lookout,  they decide to head out that direction. While walking down they see Tim unconscious in the river, the rush to Tim only to see him severely injured with blood from rocks that he landed on all over his chest and face. Not being able to see, Mika and Johnny help carry Tim down the mountain rushing to make it in time so Tim won’t bleed out. In the beginning of the day, these boys would have never thought twice about this day becoming one of the worse days they have ever been alive for. Struggling to walk Ski patrol is on there daily late day runs on the backside and see these four friends in awful condition, The ski patrol ask them “How long have you been out here for” Mika replies “The whole day, we lost one of our friends and three of us are seriously injured, with one losing blood” the ski patrol then put Tim in the harness and help him down the mountain while the other ski patrol walk with Johnny, Mika, and Eli to the base of the mountain. While getting checked on by the ski patrol at the base the four friends are still worried about Simon because they know it is a struggle for the ski patrol to find him on the backside of one the biggest mountains on the east coast. As they wait anxiously for there friend they are thinking of any possible scenario that he could be still alive. As the day goes by still no answer from the ski patrol, and the four boys are all worried, they are then escorted to a cabin where they will sleep for the night until they hear news from the ski patrol. At around 2 in the morning with all four friends sleeping  the door to the cabin opens, a shadow appears in the darkness, and they see Simon in his bright orange jacket, and Simon says “Boys I missed you!!” the ski patrol found him under snow passed out, close to dying they got him inside just in time. As the boys head home, they promise each other to be completely careful when skiing next time, unfortunately, they won’t be skiing for quite some time.
