Character Archetypes
I listed the Protagonist, Antagonist, and (an) Ally character here, because they’re all very key to the structure of the story.
- Rebel – (Protagonist) Ridge: Becomes a fighter to battle Metonym’s rebellion after losing his friends/family, but is unsure of his place in the world and his power. Ridge isn’t a rebel however, being made a member of Tract’s elite soldiers, but he fits the category in terms of description. Ridge is also very smart, and has the ability to make great changes in his society, but his anger against Metonym blinds him from these possibilities.
- Warrior (Antagonist) – Metonym: Starts an uprising and seeks to change society after fighting in wars and protecting the planet’s of his people, believing the current government is unfit to serve.
- King/Father (Ally) – Tract: Rebuilds/Revives Ridge and helps him become a warrior in the battle against Metonym’s rebellion, along with giving Ridge wisdom about society and being a good leader. Tract is unlike most high officials, and is almost always on the front lines, both heading missions and leading societal matters. Tract is also very adamant about Metonym being a vicious murderer, as if there’s a history between them, or just plain hatred, but Tract doesn’t make it very obvious, though Ridge picks up on it from time to time.
Ridge’s hometown being destroyed gives birth to a hatred for Metonym, then Tract’s wisdom and upgrades allow Ridge to enact revenge on Metonym. But in order for Ridge to actually defeat the evil that threatens his race, he has to overcome revenge and embrace his skills as a leader over his vengeance as a warrior.
Tract of course has an agenda, to eliminate Metonym’s rebellion, and Metonym has the same agenda for Tract and the entire government of Hylon society. Ridge also has the fire for revenge with destroying Metonym, which is also a way to help society. They all have the same goal, contribute to society, but each character has vastly different ways of achieving their tasks.
