OVERVIEW – AS YOU WISH

I. CHARACTER FUNCTIONS

Protagonist: Dream – the entity created to fulfill others’ stories. His ultimate goal is to be able to pursue his own happiness and be the one to decide his story’s outcome.

Opponent: The Creator – the seemingly all-powerful deity who created the Imaginary Realm. His wish is to fulfill the wishes of the dying souls and to achieve this, he creates Dream as the ‘perfect’ NPC.

Ally: Teto – one of the Realm’s residents. He’s the only one who Dream can talk to without his amnesia getting in the way and the main role in Dream’s story.

Fake-Ally Opponent: Will – a pyromaniac whose sole purpose is to ruin as many story worlds as he can. As the one who fulfills wishes, Dream helps Will without remembering about it afterward.

Fake-Opponet Ally: Tomathy – a Realm’s resident who resented Dream for helping Will, but later helps Teto save Dream.

II. CHARACTER ARCHETYPES

Rebel – Dream (Protagonist)

Reason: As a protagonist, he dares to face off god and doesn’t back down until he gets the answer for why can’t Protectors like him get to live their own life stories. However, he doesn’t know the reason behind the creation of the world and ends up hurting others around him.

Queen/Mother – The Creator (Antagonist)

Reason: As a god, The Creator creates the Imaginary Realm to protect and fulfill the wishes of the dying souls. To keep Dream from breaking this purpose, The Creator guilts him from giving up his own desires for the sake of others.

Artist/Clown – Will (Fake-Ally Opponent)

Reason: He has soon realized that everyone within the Realm and the Realm itself are against the natural order. Instead of letting others know, he instead convinces Dream that the only way to free everyone from this world is to destroy the Delusions that are trapping them. This is not true and is only a device to let him satisfy his bloodlust.

Warrior – Tomathy (Fake-Opponent Ally)

Reason: As the leader of his own team of Rebellions, he truly believes “the ends justify the means” and will not hesitate to sacrifice his own people for what he thinks is right.

Lover – Teto (Ally)

Reason: He is the only person Dream can rely on and he tries his best to give the support Dream needs. However, he forgets that his existence is just as important as Dream and makes decisions that hurt both of them in the process.

III. ARCHETYPE DESCRIPTION

Protagonist as Rebel:

Why it fits:

  • – Dream dares to defy the rules of the long-standing system.
  • – Even after being shattered, his goal doesn’t change.
  • – He cannot provide an alternative to how the Realm should be.

Deviations:

  • – Instead of destroying the system mindlessly to get what he wants, he studies the system.
  • – He stands out from the crowd but eventually learns that the more help the better.
  • – He himself inspires how the alternative to how the Realm should be.

Antagonist as Queen/Mother:

Why it fits:

  • – Essentially, what The Creator is doing is trying to protect the wishes and the souls who he deems worthy.
  • – He watches over the Realm and helps it grow through the creation of Protectors like Dream.
  • – He holds his wish so highly that he ignores the wishes of his own creations.
  • – When Dream tries to defy him, The Creator guilts and eventually, shatters him to protect his Realm.

Deviations:

  • – He does not provide the care directly to the Realm’s residents but instead lets it play out naturally.
  • – The Protector believes blindly in his philosophy; this leads to ignorance and power abuse down the line.
  • – He creates changes to the new Realm and recovers from being a tyranny.

IV. ARCHETYPE SYNERGY

On one hand, we have Dream who desperately needs a protective shell to grow and live out his story. On the other hand, The Creator has decided that Dream is the only entity that doesn’t receive such a blessing.

When the two ideologies go against each other, The Creator (Queen/Mother) has the upper hand in terms of general wisdom of the world and how Dream feels; while Dream is left in the dark about the foundations of the Realm.
