CUGR Proposal Draft

September 22, 2019

Template for first draft

Version 1.5
In at least one paragraph each, complete the following outline to draft your CUGR proposal. You can copy/past this outline into your own post/article , then just substitute your content for the instructions. Submit this as a post/article to class website and personal Portfolio.

Abstract

Summarize what you intend to accomplish as concisely as possible. Be sure to indicate somehow how this relates to your values as clarified in your Design Guide Check.

The problem

What is lacking, or what is the opportunity, in a field or community that interests you? Whom does it affect/benefit/impact and how? What do they need that they don’t have? Why should you or anyone care? How are you specifically suited to meet these challenges/needs in your community?

Cite at least three sources that support your concerns about this issue/topic/problem. You may want to use material produced in Preliminary Research and/or other sources.

Other solutions

Research at least three existing projects that come closest to solving the problem you mention. What do they do right? Where do they fall short?

Your solution

Describe your general approach. DO you want to mention New Media strategies and show how your approach embodies them? Or detail other features of your solution? Describe the outcomes you expect and stakeholders/audience affected.

Tasks

Research how you would build your solution, and then write a to-do list of at least 20 tasks required. In place of a few vague ambitions, show that you have thought through the process by listing numerous narrow tasks, eg:

Bad Good
Design the interface Draw mobile app profile views in Illustrator
Build a website Create MySQL database
Get feedback Conduct a poll on Twitter

You may want to group these into subcategories, like Research / Design / Programming / Promotion / Feedback.

Needs

Describe the practical resources you’ll need to accomplish this task. Which do you already have, and which do you need? Including any of the following:

  • Collaborators
  • Audience
  • Special hardware or software
  • Exhibition space
  • Web host and domain
  • Legal agreements
  • Life insurance (hopefully not!)

Other options

Although not required for this draft, in the future you may be asked to complete the following addenda:

  • An annotated bibliography (research for the “Problem” and “Other solutions” sections will serve as the starting point for this)
  • A project timeline (based on “Tasks”)
  • A budget (based on “Needs”)
  • A promotion plan, logo
