TEMPLATE FOR FIRST DRAFT
ABSTRACT
Summarize what you intend to accomplish as concisely as possible. Be sure to indicate somehow how this relates to your values as clarified in your Design Guide Check.
My project is a ‘docutape’ with Mac Tragakis. We want to create a documentary on the process of making music. We want to show the specifics of the in and outs of music production. We want to add a twist by making it interactive; this would give the viewer the option to chose what genre of music they want to learn about so people get what they want out of it and aren’t simply watching a documentary from beginning to end. This DocuTape’s main goal is to influence people, as well as teach them, the start to making music, how to get into creating music, and where to go (hopefully) in the future of making music. It will follow me and Austin Smith on our journey to a hopeful success. It will watch us as we create, find, and discover new music in our lives.
THE PROBLEM
What is lacking, or what is the opportunity, in a field or community that interests you? Whom does it affect/benefit/impact and how? What do they need that they don’t have? Why should you or anyone care? How are you specifically suited to meet these challenges/needs in your community?
Luckily, in recent years producers are getting a LOT more credit than they have in past years and its really good to see. Today’s music is coming down to be solely based on the instrumentals and less on the lyrics. This isn’t to say that all music is like this, but the popular pop and rap songs of today have changed from what they used to be 10-20 years in the past. Producers have been affected by the lack of credit/payment in the past, but now it’s all changing. I think this impacts artists and their producers differently, but also helps them both get recognition.
Cite at least three sources that support your concerns about this issue/topic/problem. You may want to use material produced in Preliminary Research and/or other sources.
OTHER SOLUTIONS
Research at least three existing projects that come closest to solving the problem you mention. What do they do right? Where do they fall short?
Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape
This dives into old school 80’s, a simpler time in music. It explains the major pros and cons and their up rise of cassette tapes and how these iconic pieces of plastic revolutionized generations.
Score: A Film Music Documentary
Score is a film that follows the powerful music and scores of some of the most famous movies ever created and breaking down how the composer goes about the process.
A dream about a young drummer to be one of the best to ever do it. Following his journey through a brutal training process with a hard, pushing teacher.
YOUR SOLUTION
Describe your general approach. DO you want to mention New Media strategies and show how your approach embodies them? Or detail other features of your solution? Describe the outcomes you expect and stakeholders/audience affected.
All the problem sites we listed simply give the audience an end result and don’t show the process on how they got there, therefore the audience still doesn’t know how to create the same piece. We are going to make an educational approach by making modules for people to follow along with for an end result of producing a piece of music.
TASKS
Research how you would build your solution, and then write a to-do list of at least 20 tasks required. In place of a few vague ambitions, show that you have thought through the process by listing numerous narrow tasks, eg:
Task | To Do |
---|---|
establish budget | research prices of materials needed |
storyboard | figure out what order we want to teach the viewer |
collaborate with Austin | meet up to make music and film various things |
combine film and modules | find a plugin for modules |
create title page for each module | record loops / animate a loop |
get ideas from other producers/videographers | get in contact with local producers/videographers |
publish work | build interface/website for modules |
obtain speakers | grant based |
establish audience | figure out age range of people interested |
film b roll | film mac while he’s making music |
get steadicam for b roll | rent one at IMRC |
get lighting for interview | rent at IMRC |
get mics for interview | rent at IMRC |
ask interview questions | think of 5-7 good questions per module |
film intro | set up cameras and lighting / record audio |
film module 1 | set up cameras and lighting / record audio |
film module 2 | set up cameras and lighting / record audio |
film module 2 | set up cameras and lighting / record audio |
film module 3 | set up cameras and lighting / record audio |
film module 4 | set up cameras and lighting / record audio |
film module 5 | set up cameras and lighting / record audio |
